Listen, it is about to be 8 years of blogging for me in August. It is just crazy that I have been doing this for so long. You are always learning something new along the way but there a few things I wished I knew before I started blogging.
Research Before Even Starting
There is so much information out there about blogging, it is crazy. I wish I did some research before I even started. Well I did a little but I feel like I didn’t do enough. There is so much that goes into starting a blog that I didn’t even think about like the name( the first name I had was terrible lol), what your blog is about, what you want your audience to take away from your blog and so much more. You also need to research what platform is best for you to use, what equipment you’ll need to start out with or need to save up for. You also need to establish how often you are going to blog, figure out a schedule to create content and just so much goes into starting one.
Be Patient, Success Sometimes Doesn’t Come Overnight
I had a blog before this one that I deleted because I was impatient. I thought that people were going to find my blog instantly, comment, and tell others about it. I put a post on Facebook when I first started and nothing. I think I only made about 1 or 2 posts, got frustrated and deleted it. I thought about how I gave up so easily and started again. I made a promise to never give up, that success takes some time. You may not have the overnight success like some people have, you honestly have to be patient. It does help to promote yourself but just keep blogging, people will find it.
Focus And Build For Yourself, Stop Looking At Other’s Success
Speaking of success, I know it can be hard to see your fellow bloggers/content creators gain the success you are striving for or getting those PR packages or just where you thought you would be in your blogging journey. I am no stranger to this and really had to work hard not to be so jealous and envious of others. I would wonder why I wouldn’t receive an PR packages, why I don’t have a larger following when I’m doing the same things other are doing and so on. You really have to focus on what you are doing and building your brand up. If you start looking at what everyone else is doing, you lose focus on your content. It is so hard but when you get laser focused and only worry about yourself, those opportunities will start to present themselves and you will gain that success you have been working so hard for.
No one is going to know you have a blog or create content if you don’t promote it right? People are not mind readers and you can’t assume people know what you are dong. All you can do is tell people about your blog or the content your create and it is up to them to check it out and support it. Also don’t feel guilty about promoting yourself either. I used to feel guilty and think I was doing too much but you can never promote yourself enough. I wish I knew in the beginning how to really promote my blog and Youtube channel in innovative and creative ways. I’m still learning this today because it can be a struggle sometimes.
Be Prepared To Be Your Biggest Support System,Cheerleader, etc
I feel this is really important for everyone starting on this journey. It can be lonely sometimes from the lack of support from those who you thought would support you. You really have to prepare yourself to be your biggest cheerleader and support system. Not everyone is going to like what you create or write or film and that is okay. The main focus should be on those who truly support what you do, they are the ones who matter the most. In the beginning, it is going to be on you supporting yourself and it will get frustrating but you have to remember why you are doing this.
I am pretty sure there are way more things I wish I knew before starting to blog but I felt these were the most important to talk about. There will most likely be a part 2 at some point but let me know your thoughts. What do you wish you knew before you started blogging? Let’s chat.
